Message 3 speaks about coming to the book of Proverbs to cultivate our regenerated new man. From the previous messages, the Lord revealed to us that in Proverbs, the matter of His economy is very much regarded and that His desire is not only for us to live a proper human life, but also to cultivate our regenerated new man by means of our spirit. In this message we saw that throughout Christianity, Proverbs is a very famous book because it contains many words of wisdom and advice. Many people would come to this book to seek advice, and some would even try to implement the proverbs into their life for self-perfection. It is nice to have an aspiration to be a good man, but we should see that in God's economy His desire is not to have a group of good men. Instead He wants a corporate God-man.
To read the Proverbs in a view of God's economy means that this book should not be used to build up our old man, that is, to cultivate our self and our natural man. If we would come to Proverbs in our natural man, at best, it would just be like any other self-help book being offered in the market. In coming to Proverbs, just like to any other book in the Bible, we should come to it to receive nourishment and enlightenment by praying in spirit. This should be our attitude in coming to the book of Proverbs and to any book in the Bible.
Second Corinthians 3:6b tells us that the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. When a verse catches our attention, we should pray-read it until our spirit touches the Spirit in the word of God. Among those who were useful to the Lord, Madame Guyon said, ‚ÄúPraying the Scripture is the unique way to deal with the Scripture‚ÄĚ and John Wesley said, ‚ÄúRead a little pray and meditate much‚ÄĚ. Many others like George Whitefield, Martin Luther, and etc. also taught us to pray while reading, and read while praying the word of God. This is the way to read the Bible. In our Bible reading, it would be better if we would read a little and pray more.
If our reading of Proverbs will be like this, we can get many nuggets and gems to strengthen our life of pursuing Christ for the fulfillment of God's economy in producing and building up the Body of Christ, which consummates the New Jerusalem as God's heart's desire and ultimate goal.
