The Right Way to Study – Distinguishing Between the Mind and the Spirit

Man is Composed of Three Parts

Zechariah 12:1 says, “Thus declares Jehovah, who stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundations of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him”.
Man has three parts—spirit, soul, and body—as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:23: “…may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Crucial Position of the Spirit

The spirit and the mind are not the same. The mind is part of the soul. It is our thinking, our brain. Some people are too fond of using their mind so we say that they have a “big brain”. This is the mind, the brain.

1. The Spirit is the Center of Man’s Being

How do you know the spirit is the center of your being? You know because when you call “Oh Lord Jesus”, your spirit feels warm and acquires consciousness. When the spirit senses the dispensing of life, it can supply our whole being, enabling us to have a clear mind, a balanced emotion, and a submissive will; it can even give life to our mortal body. Therefore Isaiah 40:30–31 says, “Although youths will faint and become weary, And young men will collapse exhausted; Yet those who wait on Jehovah will renew their strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles; They will run and will not faint; They will walk and will not become weary.”
The power that issues from our spirit causes our whole being—spirit, soul, and body—to be revived. Thus, if we feel weary or weak, we should exercise our spirit because this is the easiest way for a person to be renewed.

2. Asking God for a Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation

As long as your spirit is exercised, you will be able to calm down to study when you wish to. In studying, you will even be very efficient and you will have very much of the Lord’s presence.
Because the Lord is full of wisdom and understanding, James 1:5 says, “But if any one of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and does not reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Our spirit is a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Therefore dear brothers and sisters, thank the Lord. Are you studying? Ask for wisdom from the Lord. Our Lord invented all the theorems on earth and all the formulas in science. The one who tied the knot is the only one who can untie it. There are many things you and I do not know. While the scientists are still probing, God already knows the answer since everything was created by Him.
If we lack wisdom, we must ask the Lord and He will give it to us. For instance, if you get tired from studying, stand up and call [or even shout, the Lord’s name] or sing a hymn. Afterwards, ponder on what you just read. It is alright if you cannot remember them all. Do not dwell on them too much. Just enjoy [the Lord]. When you resume later, you will find that you have a deeper impression of what you have been reading.
Summarize what you read. Regardless of how many important points, mark one or two important words in each point. You can even compose a rhyme out of those words. When those few words are etched in you, you will never forget them. Take for example the Ten Commandments. Many people know them but they do not know their sequence. I, however, used ten words to memorize them. It was the same with the ten plagues [in Exodus]: blood, frog, lice, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locust, darkness and son. We can also practice this on the sequence of the 66 books of the Bible. Whenever I cannot sleep I would pray over the genealogy in Matthew. Thus, we can memorize even the genealogy in Matthew. We should do our part in studying. Then your success in the future will definitely surpass ours.
Our mind, however, should not be used for remembering diverse random matters. Towards the world, we should be the good earth [cf. Matt. 13:8]. Only the good earth bears fruit a hundredfold. Be equipped with the word of the Lord. He will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation. If we would call on the name of the Lord, we would renew our strength.
So as you can see, the spirit and the mind are actually different.

How does God speak to man?

The Lord’s word and His Spirit are like a dove: gentle and extremely keen. The Lord’s real leading to man will not fade away immediately; rather, it remains constantly. Even after three or five days, it will still touch you. If He leads you to visit someone, even if you do not have the time today, He will remind you tomorrow. After few days He will still remind you: go and visit that person! However, if it is not from the Lord, the feeling will go as quickly as it came.
Perhaps you saw nice clothes in a store window. Eventually, though, the urge to buy vanished the next day. Some do not buy even if the clothes are still there on the third day since others have also not bought them. Impulse drives you to decide at once. You should rather let one or two days pass. Wait and see. If the feeling remains, though we dare not absolutely say that it is from the Lord, there is more likelihood that it came from the Lord. If it is just something fleeting and even seems funny when you think about it, then that feeling is merely your own. The leading of the Spirit is gentle but it does not go away immediately. It will continuously anoint us until we comply. Then we will have the feeling of life and peace. Your feeling comes and goes fast. That which is from the Lord, however, does not change. His anointing will even go deeper and deeper.
