How Many Have You Brought to the Lord? (Part 3 of 3)
Success in leading men to Christ comes from going to God on man's behalf and then going to man on God's behalf. We need to pray for people that they would be saved. We also need to tell them about the Lord Jesus who wants to be their Savior.
What to say? Seems this is where the problem lies. Actually, however, the problem is that we are making things complicated. First Peter 2:9 says that we are to tell out the virtues of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. The message we are to say is actually quite personal. In other words, speak of the goodness of the Lord towards you. We may also put it this way, what was it that attracted you to Him or what is it that you like of Him?
The Bible cites instances of these simple personal messages. Andrew found the Lord first and then he brought his brother Simon Peter to the Lord by simply telling him of the fact that he had found Him (John 1:40-42). Philip also tried to do the same to Nathanael but the latter was not persuaded so eventually Philip simply said, "Come and see" (vv. 43-46). Oh, come and see! Yes, come. See my companions. See our campus meeting. See our student center. See our brothers' house. See our sisters' house. See this booklet, The Mystery of Human Life. See this Bible with footnotes, The Recovery Version. See these families whose homes have become our homes as well. See these crazy professionals (called the working saints) who choose to spend their paychecks on us (because they are crazy lovers of Jesus)! See our meeting hall. See our website. Oh, so much to see! Indeed, so many ways to see the Lord!
Moreover, the Lord is the One who called us out of darkness into light. What darkness did you have before? Dark thoughts? Dark deeds? Beings hiding in the dark? What fears lurked in you? Were you anxious all the time yet did not know why? Were there uncertainties that made you insecure? Were you sad, even depressed? Were you discontent; nothing made you happy; gloomy skies hung over your head? Were you simply bored? Thank the Lord these are now things of the past! "What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought / Since Jesus came into my heart! / I have light in my soul for which long I had sought, / Since Jesus came into my heart!" (Hymns*, 309)
And speaking of the light, that marvelous light, wonder-working light. To some, it came as a bright outlook replacing their former suicidal mood. Some felt a heavy load had come off their chest and they do not have to trudge with heavy steps anymore. There are some who were no longer aimless but found meaning and direction for their lives. To the pleasant surprise of many, God just became real to them and His words started to make sense. They do not see Him but they love Him. They began to sing and the songs (of a genre they never imagined they would like) touch their heart deeply. At the same time, amazingly, they are now able to see that they are wrong and are willing to say "Sorry". This light is surely marvelous!
Thus, we do have things to say because our Lord has done so much and He Himself is wonderful! So be bold, even thick-faced. Go and tell others the gospel, the good news, of our Lord Jesus Christ.
